Whilst the Early Church fathers spoke against the Jews in harsh words, they never ordered murder or violence. John Chrysostom even said not to harm them, as God’s judgement is for them.
Luther on the other hand set out a 7 point plan of ‘remedial actions’ to wipe out the Jews in Europe in Chapter 9 of ‘The Jews and their lies’. These were:
- for Jewish synagogues and schools to be burned to the ground, and the remnants buried out of sight;
- for houses owned by Jews to be likewise razed, and the owners made to live in agricultural outbuildings;
- for their religious writings to be taken away;
- for rabbis to be forbidden to preach, and to be executed if they do;
- for safe conduct on the roads to be abolished for Jews;
- for usury to be prohibited, and for all silver and gold to be removed and “put aside for safekeeping”; and
- for the Jewish population to be put to work as agricultural slave labor.
Yes, he planned forced conversion and genocide for the Jews if they did not convert.
Reminds me a lot of someone in the 20th Century who I am sure you would never think about celebrating…so why celebrate him?
He banned Scientific enquiry if it contradicted OT Prophets, he wanted to commit genocide, he went against Apostolic Tradition, he created doctrines which were against Scripture…
The only good thing I can think of is that he annoyed Rome. But is that worth going against the Apostolic Church for? No way.
